Better In-Vitro SPF Testing Substrates

Eurofins evaluates sand-blasted v. molded PMMA HD-6 plates.

Based on ISO 24443 testing outcomes, sand-blasted  (SB-5) PMMA plate types outperform HD-6 plates in sunscreen evaluations, according to Eurofins. In fact, the SB-5 plate type overall demonstrated the most relative and good quality reproducible data across 26 of 31 sunscreen products. Testing was performed on sprays, lotions, creams, oils and sticks.

The only sunscreen product category that the HD-6 plates outperformed the SB-5 were stick formulations. Accordng to Eurofins, this is due to the formulation type producing a thinner film across the top of the HD-6 plate's topography. In contrast, these formulations do not absorb in the SB-5 plate, causing the film to be more artificial.
